The first run should prove that the equipment and accessories work together before valuable samples are loaded. Use water or another approved, low-risk test load and follow the model-specific manual for controls and safety limits.

Prepare the installation area

Place the unit on a level surface with the specified ventilation clearance. Confirm voltage, circuit capacity and room-temperature limits. Position the vacuum pump so its exhaust and heat do not return directly into the freeze dryer.

Check that drain and vacuum connections are closed and secure. Install the selected chamber, rack or manifold without placing side loads on glass components.

Prepare and freeze the samples

Use containers intended for vacuum service and leave expansion space. Freeze samples as a thin, consistent layer; a deep unfrozen center will extend drying and can cause meltback when vacuum is applied.

For flask drying, shell-freezing can increase exposed frozen surface. For trays, use equal fill depth. For vials, keep stopper position and fill volume consistent.

Run and observe

Bring the collector to the required temperature, load the frozen samples, seal the system and then apply vacuum in the approved sequence. Record collector temperature, chamber pressure and sample observations.

Frost outside the intended condenser, an unstable pressure reading or a pump that never reaches normal operating sound should trigger a leak and load check.

Finish without losing the sample

Vent slowly to avoid disturbing light powders. Cap, stopper or package the sample promptly because dried material can absorb moisture quickly.

Defrost only after the pump is isolated. Drain meltwater, wipe the chamber and note the amount of ice collected; it is a useful check on the estimated load.

Frequently asked questions

Can I load room-temperature liquid?

Not for a standard externally frozen workflow. The product should be fully frozen before vacuum is applied unless the configured shelf system provides a validated in-situ freezing step.
