A vacuum pump connection looks simple, but hose selection, valve position, exhaust routing and pump oil condition determine whether the complete system performs. This procedure is written for routine benchtop and manifold work; the supplied freeze-dryer and pump manuals remain the controlling instructions.
Match the pump and hose to the system
Confirm the approved pump type, pumping speed, ultimate-pressure range, inlet fitting and electrical supply. More pumping speed does not correct an undersized condenser or a restricted vapor path.
Use a short vacuum-rated hose of the specified diameter. Soft tubing can collapse under vacuum, while a long or narrow hose adds conductance loss and slows pull-down.
Make a clean, strain-free connection
Switch off and isolate both machines before assembly. Inspect the pump inlet, hose, clamps and O-rings for dirt or damage, then connect the hose without twisting it or placing side load on a glass manifold.
Close the chamber drain and unused manifold valves. Verify that the pump inlet isolation valve and gas ballast are in the positions required by the startup procedure.
Control oil mist and exhaust
Route pump exhaust to a compatible oil-mist filter or laboratory exhaust arrangement. Keep hot exhaust and oil vapor away from the freeze-dryer condenser air intake and occupied breathing zones.
An oil-mist filter reduces visible aerosol but does not eliminate the need for pump maintenance or safe ventilation. Check that the filter does not create excessive backpressure.
Prove the empty system before loading samples
Start the condenser first and allow it to reach the stated acceptance temperature. Run an empty, dry-chamber pull-down test and record the time and stable pressure as a baseline.
If the empty system cannot reach its normal range, inspect valves, seals, hose joints, oil condition and gauge connections before risking samples. After a wet run, follow the specified purge or oil-service procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Can ordinary plastic tubing be used as a vacuum hose?
No. Use the vacuum-rated hose and fittings specified for the system; unsuitable tubing can collapse, leak or release contaminants.
Why is oil mist worse during a wet batch?
Water vapor and gas passing through an oil-sealed pump can increase exhaust aerosol. Check condenser performance, gas-ballast instructions, oil condition and mist-filter service.
