The decision to move into controlled shelves should come from the evidence the laboratory needs, not from a desire for a more complicated machine. Stay with a collector when the endpoint is sample recovery
Routine flask drying, many extract preparations and shallow bulk samples may only require a cold collector, suitable chamber, reliable vacuum and a repeatable pre-freezing method.
Record sample mass, depth, container and frozen water even for simple work. A larger collector rating does not replace a load estimate or an empty-system vacuum baseline.
Move to controlled shelves when temperature history becomes an input
Vial formulation studies need a defined shelf ramp, hold and pressure sequence so one run can be compared with the next. Representative product probes and recorded shelf response help explain what happened inside the load.
The move is justified when the team must protect a formulation-specific temperature limit, evaluate primary-drying margin or prepare a transfer rationale. It is not justified by vial count alone.
Treat vial-position numbers as planning inputs
A public Creator 1S record describes a 0.12 m2 shelf and a planning reference of up to 450 vials in the stated 3 mL, 16 mm format. Actual loading still depends on the exact vial and stopper drawings, edge clearance, probe vials and the loading method.
Do not convert a geometric arrangement into a guaranteed batch result. Fill volume, total ice, vapor release and condenser duty remain separate engineering inputs.
Build the handoff packet before changing equipment class
Keep the formulation, container, fill depth, loading map, freezing history, product-temperature observations, pressure trace and endpoint rationale together.
When the work becomes a controlled-shelf development program, pass that packet to the process-development team instead of copying a time-and-temperature recipe into a new machine.

No. It is a planning reference for the stated vial geometry. Actual load, process performance and product acceptance require the project drawings, formulation and evidence plan.
